Eating Out

West Palm Beach's food scene runs the gamut from old-Florida fish shacks to ambitious New American places trying to compete with Miami. The cheapest good eating is along Clematis Street and Dixie Highway: Cuban sandwiches, conch fritters, fresh stone crab in season (October–May).

For a more serious meal, the restaurants in Rosemary Square and along Dixie south of Belvedere are the safe bets. Local specialities to seek out: pompano on the grill, Caribbean spiny lobster, and Florida stone crab claws (which are sustainably harvested — only the claws are taken, then the crab is released). Tip generously: the South Florida service standard expects 20%.
