Andersonville is about a 2.5-hour drive south of Atlanta, roughly halfway to the Gulf Coast. The nearest large town is Americus, about 15 km south, which has the closest motels and restaurants. There is no public transport to the historic site; a car is essential. The route runs through pleasant rolling farmland once you leave the Interstate, and a visit can be combined easily with the Jimmy Carter National Historical Park in nearby Plains, the former president's home town.
