Phinizy Swamp Nature Park is Augusta's best easy escape into wetland country. Boardwalks and trails lead through cypress-edged water, open marsh, and wooded edges where birds, turtles, and the occasional alligator are part of the draw.
The park is close enough to the city for a morning walk, but it feels very different from downtown Augusta and the riverfront. Go early for wildlife and cooler air, and bring insect repellent in warm months; this is real swamp habitat, not a manicured garden.
