Augusta is best known internationally for the Masters golf tournament, held every April at the Augusta National Golf Club. During Masters week the city fills up completely and prices spike enormously; book months in advance if you're coming for the tournament. For the other 51 weeks, Augusta National is closed to the public — you can drive past on Washington Road, but there's no access.
Away from golf, Augusta has a pleasant brick-paved Riverwalk along the Savannah River, and a compact historic downtown with some good restaurants. The Augusta Museum of History covers the region's history from Native American settlement through James Brown (who grew up here). The Boyhood Home of Woodrow Wilson is open for tours. Augusta Canal, a 19th-century industrial waterway, has been preserved and can be explored by boat or towpath trail.
