Savannah Riverwalk

Augusta's Riverwalk runs along the south bank of the Savannah River for about two miles through the centre of the city, paved in brick and lined with benches, sculptures, and views across the water to the South Carolina shore. It connects Eighth Street to the Sixth Street corridor and passes through Riverwalk Park, a popular gathering spot for locals.

The walk is at its best in the morning before the heat builds, or in the early evening when the light on the river is good. Interpretive markers along the route trace the history of Augusta's waterfront, from the colonial trading post that founded the city to the steamboat era that made it prosperous. The amphitheatre at the park end hosts outdoor events through spring and autumn.

On summer weekends the riverfront fills up; the rest of the year it's genuinely relaxed. The Riverwalk is free and accessible from multiple downtown entry points.
