Red Top Mountain State Park

A 1,776-acre state park on the shore of Lake Allatoona, fifteen minutes east of Cartersville off I-75. The lake — created in the 1950s by the Allatoona Dam on the Etowah River — is the centre of activity, with a swimming beach, boat ramps, kayak and pontoon rentals, and several miles of shoreline trail.

Inland there are eight miles of hiking and mountain-biking trails through hardwood forest, a small reconstructed 1860s homestead, and a good network of cabins and campgrounds. The "Red Top" name comes from the iron-rich red soil of the area, mined for ore through the 19th century. Sunday afternoons in summer are very busy; weekday mornings are quiet.
