Plains High School Visitor Center

The 1921 brick schoolhouse where both Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter studied — he graduated in 1941, she in 1944 — now houses the main visitor centre for the historical park. The school closed in 1979 and was donated to the park in 1996.

Several classrooms have been restored to their 1930s appearance, including Carter's old physics lab. Other rooms hold exhibits on his early life, naval career, the 1976 campaign, his presidency, the Carter Center, and the post-presidency work that won him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. The main hall shows a 25-minute orientation film on loop. Free entry, open daily.
