Haleiwa Town

Haleiwa town is the North Shore's commercial hub — a two-lane strip of surf shops, art galleries, shave ice stands, plate lunch counters, and general stores that manages to feel like a real Hawaiian community rather than a tourist district despite the steady flow of visitors. The buildings are low, weathered, and eclectic, and the speed limit slows to a crawl through the center, which is either frustrating or charming depending on your disposition.

The iconic rainbow bridge at the entrance to town, over the Anahulu River, marks the beginning of the strip. Matsumoto's Shave Ice at 66-087 Kamehameha Highway has been serving since 1951 and maintains its position as the canonical destination despite the competition that has grown up around it. The surf shops stock everything from beginner shortboards to custom-shaped longboards, and several offer lessons and rentals. The farmers market on Sunday mornings draws locals from across the North Shore and is worth getting up for.
