Fort Elizabeth, formally Russian Fort Elizabeth State Historical Park, is a low-key but unusual stop near Waimea. The remaining earthworks and stone traces point to a brief Russian-American Company episode in Hawaiian history, far from the standard beach-and-canyon story of Kauai.
Do not expect a reconstructed fortress. The appeal is the setting, the historical oddity, and the way the site complicates Kauai's early nineteenth-century politics. It pairs naturally with Waimea town and the road toward Waimea Canyon.
