Kilohana Plantation

Restored Kauai plantation estate with a 1930s mansion, tropical grounds, and a heritage railway.

Kilohana Plantation is a restored estate near Lihue that gives Kauai's plantation era a more tangible setting than a roadside plaque. The centrepiece is a 1930s Tudor-style mansion built for Gaylord Wilcox, surrounded by lawns, tropical planting, shops, dining, and open grounds that still hint at the island's sugar history.

The strongest reason to come is the Kauai Plantation Railway, a short heritage train ride through the estate's working farm plots and orchards. It is family-friendly and a little staged, but it also gives useful context for how sugar, railways, and large estates shaped modern Kauai. For travelers based on the east or south side, Kilohana is an easy stop between Lihue, Poipu, and Waimea Canyon rather than a destination that needs a full day.
