Getting There

Lanai has no direct flights from the mainland United States and no direct international connections. Every visitor arrives either by ferry from Maui or by inter-island flight through Honolulu.

By ferry — The Expeditions Ferry runs several times daily between Lahaina Harbor on Maui's west coast and Manele Harbor on Lanai's south shore. The crossing takes around 45 minutes and is the most popular way to arrive. The fare is modest by Hawaiian standards, the views across the channel are good, and the ferry lands you directly below Hulopoe Bay. On calm days the crossing is pleasant; when the channel is rough, it can be a lively 45 minutes. Check the Expeditions Ferry schedule in advance, particularly for the last return sailing — missing it means an unplanned night on the island, which is not the worst outcome but may not be the plan.

Note that Lahaina was severely damaged by the August 2023 wildfire. Check the current operating status of Lahaina Harbor and confirm departure points before travelling.

By air — Mokulele Airlines operates inter-island flights between Honolulu (HNL) and Lanai Airport (LNY). The flight takes about 30 minutes. Lanai Airport is small and simple — a waiting room, a few cars, no commercial services. If you're coming from a neighbour island other than Maui, connecting through Honolulu is the standard route.
