Lanai City

Lanai City is the island's only town, home to around 3,000 people, and it has the feel of a place that time has treated gently. The original layout was built by the Dole Company in the 1920s to house plantation workers — a simple grid of wooden cottages, shade trees, and small businesses arranged around Dole Park, a grassy square at the centre of town.

The park is still the social heart of things. Residents gather there in the evenings; children play on the grass; old men sit on benches. The surrounding storefronts hold a small collection of local shops, galleries, and restaurants, none of them chains. The Richard's Market and International Food and Clothing Center have been serving the island for generations.

Lanai City sits at about 1,600 feet, which means it's noticeably cooler than the coast — bring a layer if you're heading up after a day at the beach. Everything in town is walkable. It's small enough to cover in an hour but agreeable enough to spend an afternoon.
