Pu'u Pehe (Sweetheart Rock)

Sea-stack viewpoint above Hulopoʻe Bay, one of Lānaʻi’s classic short walks.

Pu'u Pehe, usually called Sweetheart Rock, is the red-brown sea stack rising from the water beyond Hulopoʻe Bay. The short walk from the beach is one of Lānaʻi’s most rewarding easy outings, with tide pools, cliffs, seabirds, and a clean view of the rock against the channel.

The place carries a well-known Hawaiian legend, but even without the story the setting is strong. Go early for cooler light and fewer people, and keep back from the cliff edge. The trail is brief, but the combination of lava coast, bright water, and open sky makes it feel larger than the distance suggests.
