Ernest Hemingway's Grave

Hemingway shot himself at his house in Ketchum on 2 July 1961 and is buried in the Ketchum Cemetery on the north edge of town. The grave is a plain rectangular slab of grey granite under three pines, with only his name and dates. His fourth wife Mary, his son Jack, and several other family members lie alongside him.

The cemetery is on Highway 75 next to the Ketchum Public Library. Park on the gravel verge and walk in from the main entrance; the grave is on the left, perhaps 30 metres along the central path. It is more affecting than the simplicity suggests — the trees, the mountains behind, the lack of fuss.

A story
Visitors leave whiskey bottles, pennies, and unsmoked cigars on the slab. The cemetery groundskeepers clear the offerings every week and pile them in a shed at the back; whatever is left after a year goes to local charities and the bottles to the Pioneer Saloon.
