C.S. Norton Mansion

The C.S. Norton Mansion is one of the grand limestone-magnate houses that ring downtown Bedford. Built for one of the local quarry owners in the late nineteenth century, it is an exuberant display of what the local stone can do — carved sills and lintels, columns, balustrades, and a heavy cornice, all in the pale grey oolitic limestone that made the town's fortune.

The mansion is privately owned and not generally open to visitors, but it can be admired from the sidewalk. Together with the houses in the Zahn and Bedford historic districts, it forms a kind of catalogue of the architectural ambitions of Bedford's stone-rich elite around 1900.
