Green Hill Cemetery, on the western edge of town, is the best place to see what Bedford's stone carvers could do when they worked for themselves. Quarrymen, masons, and sculptors who spent their lives shaping limestone for buildings elsewhere are buried under headstones that read as a kind of trade exhibition.
The most famous is the full-scale limestone replica of Louis Baker's workbench, complete with carved tools and a half-finished piece, left exactly as he had it the day he died in 1917. Other markers take the form of carved tree stumps, draped urns, and small temples. A slow walk through the older sections is a quietly moving way to spend an hour.
