Saylorville Lake is a large reservoir north of Des Moines and one of central Iowa's main outdoor recreation areas. Visitors come for boating, swimming, fishing, campgrounds, trails, and wildlife areas around the lake shore.
It is most useful as a warm-weather day trip from Des Moines, especially if you want open water and easy trails without driving far from the city.
