Ida Grove

Small western Iowa town with castles, a skating rink, and other eccentric local landmarks.

Ida Grove has a disproportionate number of attractions for a small Iowa town, thanks largely to one man's eccentric vision. Castles, a palatial skating rink, and a half-scale replica of the HMS Bounty dot the landscape — all the legacy of a local businessman who liked to build things. The Moorehead House adds a touch of Victorian grandeur.

The town occupies a quiet spot in western Iowa's rolling farmland. It is worth a detour if you are passing through the area, if only to figure out why there is a castle in the middle of a cornfield.

Day Trips

Denison (25 miles south) is the largest nearby town and the seat of Crawford County. It is the birthplace of Donna Reed and has a small museum dedicated to the actress. The town itself has more dining options than Ida Grove and a pleasant main street.

Cherokee (30 miles northeast) is another small county seat worth a quick stop. The Sanford Museum and Planetarium there has a surprisingly strong collection of regional archaeology and natural history, along with one of Iowa's few public planetariums.

Sioux City (60 miles southwest) is the major regional city and offers the full range of urban amenities: shopping, a larger restaurant scene, the Sergeant Floyd Monument, and the Sioux City Art Center. It makes for a comfortable half-day or full-day excursion.

Eating Out

Ida Grove's dining scene is what you would expect from a small Iowa agricultural town: a handful of casual spots serving straightforward American food. The town has a diner or two and a couple of bars that also serve meals. For a wider selection, Denison — about 25 miles to the south — has a more varied range of restaurants.

Getting Around

Ida Grove is a small town and most of its sights are easily covered on foot or by a short drive. The castle buildings are scattered across different parts of town, so driving between them is the most practical approach. There is no local public transit. Parking is plentiful throughout town. A bicycle works well for exploring the flat streets and the path along the Maple River on a fine day.

When to Go

Late spring through early fall (May to October) is the best time to visit Ida Grove. The castle buildings can be admired from the road year-round, but the warmer months make it far more pleasant to walk around town and explore Battle Creek Lake and the surrounding parks. Iowa summers are warm and humid, with July highs typically in the upper 80s Fahrenheit. Winter brings harsh cold and occasional heavy snowfall, making driving in the area more difficult — many visitors simply pass through on their way elsewhere during that season.
