Cedar Falls is a college town in north-east Iowa, joined at the hip with Waterloo but easier to like at a visitor's pace. The University of Northern Iowa gives it theatres, galleries, and a steady student pulse, while the Cedar River and the old railroad corridors give it some of the best urban trails in the state.
The town's centre is the Main Street district, a tidy run of brick storefronts, cafes, bars, and small shops close to the river. It is not a blockbuster destination, but it clears the spare-day test: you can visit a good local-history museum, walk or bike the Cedar Valley Trails, see what's on at UNI, and end up downtown without feeling like you settled for a generic stop.
Cedar Falls works best as a relaxed half-day or overnight in the Cedar Valley. Pair it with Waterloo if you want more museums, or use it as a softer college-town base for this part of Iowa.
