Lebold Mansion

Sandstone Italianate mansion built in 1880 by an Abilene banker

A 23-room Italianate-Gothic mansion built in 1880 by Conrad H. Lebold, a German immigrant banker who arrived with little and ended up owning much of Abilene's commercial real estate. The four-storey limestone block on a small rise west of downtown looks faintly out of place on the plains — there's a turret, balconies, ornate woodwork, and a wraparound porch.

The house has changed hands many times and is currently a private bed-and-breakfast that opens for tours by appointment. Even from outside it's worth driving past for the architecture, which says more than any panel about how quickly money was made in the cattle-trade boom years. A self-guided historic-walk brochure from the visitor centre includes it.
