Abilene celebrates its cowtown heritage with an unapologetic flourish: a giant, sheet-metal belt buckle, 20 feet across and 14 feet high, mounted on the side of a brick building on Buckeye Avenue. The buckle features a longhorn steer, a Texas cowboy and a Chisholm Trail map; it is genuinely the largest of its kind by a comfortable margin.
It is the work of a local craftsman and was unveiled to coincide with one of Abilene's annual heritage festivals. Park anywhere on the street; ten minutes is plenty. The kind of thing that justifies a side trip on a long Kansas drive.
