Danville

Small Bluegrass city where Kentucky statehood history sits beside unusual museums and Centre College.

Danville is a small Bluegrass city with a bigger historical footprint than its size suggests. Kentucky's early statehood story is centered here, and the compact downtown makes it easy to combine old political history, a medical landmark, and a surprisingly memorable museum in one day.

Start at Constitution Square, where Kentucky's first constitution was signed. A block away, the McDowell House Museum tells a stranger and more specific story: the first successful removal of an ovarian tumor, performed in 1809 without modern anesthesia or antisepsis.

Danville also has enough character beyond plaques and cabins. Centre College keeps the town lively, while the Great American Dollhouse Museum is much better than its name may suggest: miniature neighborhoods, houses, shops, and social worlds arranged with obsessive care.

Getting There

Danville sits south of Lexington in central Kentucky. US 127 runs north-south through town, and US 150 connects it with the wider Bluegrass region. A car is the normal way to visit, especially if you want to add Perryville Battlefield or Harrodsburg.
