Sierra Vista sits in far southeastern Arizona, where the desert rises into the oak canyons of the Huachuca Mountains. It is not a pretty old mining town like Bisbee, but it has something rarer: easy access to some of the best birding country in the United States.
The strongest reason to stop is the landscape south and east of town. Ramsey Canyon Preserve is famous for hummingbirds and shaded trails, while the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area protects a desert river corridor used by migrating birds and wildlife. The Huachucas give the city a real mountain edge, with hiking and canyon roads close enough for a spare afternoon.
Sierra Vista also has a military story. Fort Huachuca began in the Apache Wars and remains an active Army post, so visits require a little planning. Put together, the fort, the canyons, and the San Pedro valley make Sierra Vista a worthwhile base for travelers already exploring Cochise County.
