Conrad Rice Mill

The Conrad Rice Mill on Ann Street is a working industrial facility that has been milling rice in New Iberia since 1912, making it the oldest rice mill in continuous operation in the United States. Tours of the mill run regularly and provide a genuinely educational look at traditional rice milling — the original wooden machinery is still operational alongside newer equipment, and the guide explains the history of Louisiana's rice industry and the Cajun communities that grew it.

The mill also contains a small Cajun country store selling rice, hot sauces, cookbooks, and local food products, and the mill's location in the older warehouse district near downtown makes it an easy addition to a Main Street and Shadows-on-the-Teche itinerary. The Konriko wild pecan rice sold in the shop is worth buying and is difficult to find outside Louisiana.

A story
The Conrad Rice Mill is the oldest operating rice mill in the United States — founded in 1912 and still milling rice on the same site, still using equipment from the early 20th century alongside more recent machinery. The mill produces Konriko brand wild pecan rice, a naturally aromatic long-grain variety grown in the Louisiana marshlands that has become one of the few genuinely distinctive American regional rice products.
