Government House

Official residence of the Governor of Maryland since 1870

The Maryland governor's mansion has stood on State Circle directly across from the State House since 1870. The original Victorian design was extensively remodelled in 1936 to give it the Georgian Revival look it has today, harmonising it with the colonial buildings around the circle. The interior contains a notable collection of Maryland decorative arts including silver, glassware, and portraits.

Tours are offered on Wednesday and Thursday mornings by appointment only; bookings are made through the Government House Trust. The grounds are not open to the public but the building can be admired from the surrounding streets at any time. Behind it, the modern Legislative Services Building handles most of the day-to-day government work.
