St. Anne's Church

19th-century parish church on Church Circle, the third on the site

The current St. Anne's, consecrated in 1859, is the third church to stand on the round green at Church Circle — one of the two circles that define Francis Nicholson's 1695 town plan. The first burned in 1858, the second was demolished, and the present granite Romanesque Revival building is the survivor. The bell, cast in London in 1700, is older than the church around it. King William III donated the silver communion service in 1696, still in use today.

The churchyard is a quiet pocket of the historic district and contains the graves of several colonial governors and Founding Fathers, including Maryland signer of the Declaration of Independence Charles Carroll the Barrister. The stained glass behind the altar, depicting the Resurrection, won a gold medal at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago.
