A small granite jail built in 1878, just behind the Howard County Circuit Courthouse. It served as the county lockup for almost a century. The building is closed to the public, but it's worth a brief detour from the courthouse green to look at: the heavy iron-shuttered windows and the windowless rear wall make plain what it was for, and it sits in a quiet pocket of the courthouse complex that most visitors never wander into.
