Patapsco Valley State Park

Forested river gorge with mill ruins and hiking trails

The Patapsco River flows through a narrow granite gorge directly below the historic district, and the state park picks up where the town ends. Trails follow both banks, crossing old stone bridges and passing the ruins of 19th-century mill structures. It's a surprisingly wild stretch of forest for somewhere so close to Baltimore — the terrain is steep and the canopy is thick.

The Cascade Falls trail is a short but satisfying walk from the park entrance near the railroad station. More serious hikers can connect to longer loops through the valley.

A story
The Patapsco River flooded catastrophically in 2016 and 2018, sending walls of water down Main Street and sweeping cars and storefronts into the gorge. The flood walls built afterward changed the character of the lower street, but the river itself — fast, rocky, and hemmed in by granite — remains as dramatic as it was when the Ellicott brothers chose this spot to build their mills.
