The Montgomery County Courthouse Historic District anchors the southern end of the historic downtown. The complex includes several generations of courthouse buildings, the oldest dating to 1839, along with other civic structures added over the following century. The ensemble is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and represents the county seat's long history as a centre of local government.
The surrounding streets — particularly East Montgomery Avenue — are worth a slow walk past brick storefronts and restored 19th-century buildings. The area has improved considerably since the early 2000s and now has a handful of good restaurants and bars within easy walking distance.
