Rockville

Maryland county-seat city north of Washington, D.C., with a revived historic town centre.

Rockville is the county seat of Montgomery County, Maryland, just north of Washington, D.C. It is primarily a suburban city, but the historic town centre has some character — the area around the courthouse and along East Montgomery Avenue has been revitalised with restaurants and shops centred on Rockville Town Square.

The most notable landmark is St. Mary's Catholic Church, where F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda are buried. The small churchyard is easy to find and worth a quiet visit if you are a fan of the writer. The Beall–Dawson House, a Federal-style mansion from 1815, houses the county historical society and an unusual 19th-century doctor's office museum next door.

Rockville is well-served by the Metro (Red Line) and makes a practical base for visiting Washington if you prefer staying outside the city. The Korean restaurant scene along Veirs Mill Road is one of the better in the Washington suburbs.
