Solomons

Chesapeake waterfront town at the Patuxent River mouth, anchored by a strong marine museum.

North America > United States > Maryland > Solomons

Solomons sits at the mouth of the Patuxent River, where Southern Maryland leans into the Chesapeake Bay. It is small, waterside, and busy with boats, but it is more than a restaurant strip: the town has one of Maryland's best regional marine museums and enough public waterfront to make a spare day feel well used.

The Calvert Marine Museum is the anchor, with Chesapeake workboats, fossils from the Calvert Cliffs, aquariums, and the relocated Drum Point Lighthouse. On the island side, the Solomons boardwalk and fishing pier give you the slow version of the place: river views, gulls, bridge traffic, and boats working in and out of Back Creek.

Add Annmarie Sculpture Garden in nearby Dowell if you want art and shade, or use Solomons as a base for Calvert Cliffs and St. Mary's County. It is strongest as a day trip from Washington, Baltimore, or Annapolis when you want Chesapeake history without a long Eastern Shore drive.
