Brimfield Antique Show

The Brimfield Antique Show takes place three times a year — in May, July, and September — along a roughly one-mile stretch of Route 20 in Brimfield, five miles west of Sturbridge. More than 6,000 dealers occupy over 20 separate fields, each field independently operated with its own hours, admission policies, and character. Some fields open days before others, which creates a rolling schedule across the week-long event. The scale is hard to grasp before you've been: this is not a large flea market, it's an entire temporary town dedicated to antiques and collectibles.

The range of merchandise is equally vast — 18th-century American furniture sits a few booths away from 1970s advertising signs, Depression-era glass, vintage clothing, military surplus, garden ornaments, and genuine rarities that surface once in a collector's lifetime. Prices are negotiable, and negotiation is expected. The best strategy for serious buyers is to arrive at dawn on the first day of a field opening, move fast, carry cash, and make decisions quickly — the better dealers see dozens of knowledgeable buyers in the first hour and prices hold firm after that. For casual browsers, any morning mid-week offers a more relaxed experience. Bring comfortable shoes, cash, and a plan for how you'll get anything large home.

A story
The Brimfield Antique Show started in 1959 when dealer Gordon Reid set up a field along Route 20 and invited other dealers to join him. What began as a handful of vendors has grown into one of the largest outdoor antiques markets in the world, with over 6,000 dealers spread across more than 20 fields along a mile-long stretch of highway. Serious dealers arrive before dawn on opening day to sweep the best pieces before the general public gets in — prices at 6am on day one are often half what they'll be by noon.
