Walker Pond

Walker Pond sits at the heart of Wells State Park and is the clearest reason to visit the park on a warm day. The swimming beach is on the eastern shore, with a sandy bottom, a roped swim area, and a bathhouse. The water is clean and relatively warm by midsummer — it's a kettle pond, formed by a glacial deposit, and the enclosed basin heats up more reliably than river-fed swimming holes. Lifeguards are present during summer weekends and some weekdays; check the Massachusetts DCR website for current schedules before visiting if you're bringing children.

Beyond swimming, Walker Pond is good for fishing from shore or a small boat — electric motors only are permitted, which keeps the surface quiet. Perch and largemouth bass are the main species. Canoe and kayak rentals are sometimes available through the park concession in summer. The quieter parts of the shoreline, accessible by foot trail from the campground, are far less busy than the main beach on weekends. In fall, the pond reflects the surrounding foliage and the scene is predictably photogenic.
