Buddy's Pizza

The original home of Detroit-style square pizza

Address 17125 Conant St, Detroit, MI 48212

Buddy's at 17125 Conant Street, on the corner of Conant and Six Mile in northeast Detroit, is the birthplace of Detroit-style pizza. The original room is small, dark, and unchanged in feel since the 1940s. The classic order is a four-square cheese pizza with pepperoni and the brick-cheese stripes that became the city's signature. Buddy's now has dozens of locations across Michigan, but the Conant Street original is the pilgrimage.

Other Detroit-style options are worth a parallel visit: Loui's in Hazel Park and Cloverleaf in Eastpointe both make a serious case. Plan for a wait at peak times.

A story
Buddy's invented Detroit-style pizza in 1946: a rectangular Sicilian-style pie baked in a blue-steel pan that had originally been an automotive drip tray, with cheese pulled to the edges so it caramelises against the metal. The format has since gone national.
