Polish Village Cafe is in a basement under a Polish-language bookstore in Hamtramck, the Polish enclave entirely surrounded by Detroit. The menu is the Polish standard: pierogi, golabki, kielbasa, dill pickle soup, czarnina (duck blood soup) for the adventurous. The room is wood-panelled and tiny and feels unchanged since the 1970s.
Hamtramck has been Polish since the early 20th century and more recently Bangladeshi and Yemeni as well. The Polish Village is the surviving anchor of the older identity. Cash and card; closed Mondays. A short drive northeast of downtown.
