Browning is the main town of the Blackfeet Reservation, just east of Glacier National Park. Many travellers pass through it on the way to the mountains, but the town is not only a service stop. Its strongest reason to pause is Blackfeet culture: museum collections, art, bison, and one of the major Native gatherings in the northern Rockies.
The Museum of the Plains Indian is the essential stop, with historic and contemporary work from Blackfeet and other Northern Plains peoples. West of town, the Blackfeet Nation Bison Reserve gives a glimpse of the tribe's restored herd against open prairie and mountain-edge country.
Browning is still rough-edged and practical, and it does not compete with Glacier National Park for scenery. It is worth adding to a Glacier trip when you want the human and cultural side of this landscape, especially during North American Indian Days in July.
