Hemenway Park

Hemenway Park is a small, ordinary-looking neighbourhood park on the north edge of Boulder City — until you notice the bighorn sheep grazing on the grass. The animals are wild but used to humans, and the park is one of the few places in Nevada where you can reliably see them up close.

A small fenced viewing area at the southern end of the park lets you watch them without disturbance. They tend to come down in the cooler hours of the day, especially summer mornings and late afternoons. Don't approach or feed them; rangers patrol regularly and the fines are stiff. The park itself has shaded picnic tables and clean restrooms — a good lunch stop on the way to the dam.

A story
A herd of around two dozen wild desert bighorn sheep regularly comes down from the surrounding hills to drink and graze on the lawn at Hemenway Park, sometimes within ten metres of the picnic tables. They are most reliable in the early morning during summer, when they descend in search of water.
