Winged Figures of the Republic

The Winged Figures of the Republic are two enormous bronze sentinels — male, seated, with stylised art deco wings — flanking the bronze flagpole at the Nevada-side entrance to Hoover Dam. They are one of the most photographed elements of the dam and the most striking piece of public sculpture in the southwest.

The figures are part of a larger plaza by Oskar Hansen, including the terrazzo floor mosaic with its embedded star map. Visitors traditionally rub the toes of the figures for luck — they are polished to a high shine, while the rest of the bronze has taken on a deep verdigris. There is no fee to visit; park on the Nevada side of the dam and walk across.

A story
The Norwegian-born sculptor Oskar J.W. Hansen designed the two 9-metre bronze figures and the surrounding terrazzo plaza in 1935. He embedded a star chart in the floor showing the exact alignment of the planets on the day President Roosevelt dedicated the dam — partly so that, as he put it, 'if Hoover Dam were ever destroyed in a war, the era could be calculated by the celestial coordinates.'
