Reno is the gateway to northwest Nevada and the Lake Tahoe region, and the easiest international airport for travellers heading to Burning Man on the Black Rock Desert.
By air — Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) is just south of downtown, with frequent domestic flights from the major western hubs (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Denver, Phoenix, Salt Lake City) and a handful of seasonal services. A taxi or rideshare to downtown takes ten minutes; the RTC Ride bus also runs to the city centre.
By car — Reno is on Interstate 80, the main east–west route across the northern US. San Francisco is about 220 miles (3.5 hours) west; Salt Lake City is 520 miles east. US 395 runs north–south through the city, linking Susanville and the Lassen volcanic country to the north with the eastern Sierra and Mammoth Lakes to the south.
By train — Amtrak's California Zephyr stops at downtown Reno's station once daily in each direction, running between Chicago and Emeryville (San Francisco Bay). It is a beautiful but slow journey; check current schedules.
By bus — Greyhound and several smaller operators run intercity buses; the bus to South Lake Tahoe is a useful option for skiers without a car.
