Shopping in Reno divides between the standard mall scene at the city's edges and a much more interesting strip of independent shops in Midtown, the redeveloping district along South Virginia Street a few blocks south of the casino core. The Midtown shops — vinyl, vintage clothing, art and design, Natural Selection for taxidermy and oddities, Junkee Clothing Exchange for second-hand — are the most rewarding browsing in town.
For mainstream brands, the Meadowood Mall at the southern end of South Virginia Street covers the usual department stores and the Summit Reno shopping centre in south Reno has the higher-end options.
Cabela's at the eastern edge of town is a huge outdoor gear barn worth a stop if you are heading on to backcountry Nevada or Burning Man. Tax-free Nevada makes some larger purchases (jewellery, electronics) noticeably cheaper than across the border in California.
