Thunder Mountain Monument

A handmade folk-art monument beside I-80 near Imlay, east of Winnemucca.

Thunder Mountain Monument is an eccentric roadside complex of concrete, stone, found objects, and personal mythology. Built by Frank Van Zant, it feels less like a conventional monument than a stubborn outsider-art environment placed in the open Nevada desert.

It is far enough from Winnemucca to be a deliberate stop, but it makes sense for road-trippers crossing I-80. The site is weathered and informal, so the best visit is slow and observant: look at the embedded objects, handmade figures, and the way the desert has become part of the work.
