Moultonborough

Lakes Region town with a mountaintop estate, loon sanctuary, and old village store.

Moultonborough sits on the north side of Lake Winnipesaukee, quieter than the busier resort towns around the lake but with several strong reasons to stop. Its best-known sight is Castle in the Clouds, a mountaintop estate with views, trails, gardens, and a house tour.

Closer to the water, the Loon Center makes the lake's wildlife story easy to grasp, while the old village center has one of New Hampshire's classic country stores. It is still part of the wider Lakes Region, but Moultonborough has enough of its own anchors for a full, easy day.

The mood here is low-key: lake roads, wooded hills, conservation land, and small-town history. It is a good choice when you want the Lakes Region without the boardwalk bustle.
