Cape May sits on a major Atlantic flyway, and the bird observatory at the point — run by New Jersey Audubon — is one of the top birding sites in North America. In autumn, hawk watchers crowd the platform near the lighthouse to count thousands of broad-winged hawks, sharp-shinned hawks, kestrels, and the occasional bald eagle riding the thermals south. Spring brings songbirds, and shorebird and butterfly migrations layer through the seasons.
The observatory runs free hawk-watch interpretation in season, plus paid pelagic trips and bird walks. The Northwood Center on East Lake Drive is the indoor hub with field guides, bins, and staff who will tell you what is flying that day. Beginners are welcome — even a casual visit during the October peak is an experience.
