Cape May Lighthouse

The 157-foot lighthouse at Cape May Point has been guiding ships into Delaware Bay since 1859. You can climb the 199 cast-iron steps to the watch gallery for a panoramic view of the cape, the bay, and on a clear day the Delaware coast across the water. The visitor centre at the base, in the old oil house, covers the history of the keepers and the engineering of the Fresnel lens.

The lighthouse sits inside Cape May Point State Park, which also includes hiking trails through coastal dune and marsh habitat, and a beach with a constant offshore current that draws surfers. The state park is one of the prime birding spots on the East Coast — see the bird observatory POI for more.

A story
The 1859 tower is the third lighthouse on this site — the previous two were lost to erosion. The Fresnel lens was removed in 1946 and now sits in the Cape May County Park Museum. The beam from the modern replacement is still visible 24 nautical miles out to sea.
