Trenton's food scene is unpretentious and reflects its diverse population. The city is locally famous for its thin-crust "Trenton tomato pie" — a style of pizza where the mozzarella goes on first and the sauce on top. The best places to find it are in Chambersburg, the Italian-American neighbourhood south of downtown.
De Lorenzo's Tomato Pies has been the standard-bearer for Trenton tomato pie since 1947, though the original Hamilton Avenue location closed and the family now operates from Robbinsville, a short drive south. In Chambersburg itself, Papa's Tomato Pies on Sloan Avenue is the oldest surviving original-location tomato pie restaurant in the country, open since 1912. Cash only, no reservations, expect a wait on weekends.
Beyond pizza, the area around the State House has several casual lunch spots catering to government workers — sandwiches and diner fare rather than destination dining. For a proper sit-down meal, the Chambersburg neighbourhood has a handful of Italian-American restaurants that have operated for decades.
