Things to Do

Trenton is more historically dense than most visitors expect. The Revolutionary War sites alone justify a half-day: Washington's crossing and the battle that followed happened here, and three of the key sites — the Old Barracks, the State House, and the battlefield monument — are within easy walking distance of each other. The New Jersey State Museum is free and broader than its name suggests, covering natural history and fine art alongside the expected state history.

The industrial legacy is equally compelling. John Roebling's wire works, where the cables for the Brooklyn Bridge were made, still stands on the south side of town. The famous Trenton Makes bridge sign — lit in red neon — spans the Delaware and has become the city's most recognisable image.

For neighbourhood character, Mill Hill has the best-preserved 18th and 19th century streetscapes, while Chambersburg to the south retains its Italian-American identity with bakeries and old-school trattorias.
