Hungo Pavi is the first great house you reach after the visitor centre, set against the north canyon wall with a clean view of Fajada Butte to the south. It is largely unexcavated — only the front rooms have been cleared — which gives a clear sense of what the other great houses looked like before the archaeologists got to them: walls poking out of grey mounds of windblown silt.
A flat quarter-mile trail loops around the front, and interpretive signs explain the construction. Twenty minutes is enough.
