Jamestown is a small city in the southwestern corner of New York State, on the outlet of Chautauqua Lake. It is best known as the birthplace of Lucille Ball — the National Comedy Center, opened in 2018, is the main draw and a genuinely engaging museum dedicated to the art and history of comedy. Just up the street, the smaller Lucy-Desi Museum tells the personal story of Lucy and Desi Arnaz.
A short drive north, the Chautauqua Institution on the lake's western shore has been running summer programmes in arts, education, and religion since 1874. The grounds are peaceful and the architecture is distinctive — a gated Victorian campus on the lakeshore.
Downtown Jamestown itself has been quietly recovering: the Downtown Historic District preserves a tight cluster of late-19th-century commercial buildings, the Reg Lenna Center hosts touring music and film, and the Robert H. Jackson Center honours the local lawyer who became the chief American prosecutor at Nuremberg. The Fenton History Center and the Roger Tory Peterson Institute cover regional history and natural history respectively.
The surrounding Chautauqua County has rolling farmland, wineries along the Lake Erie grape belt, and good access to Allegany State Park for hiking.
