A Rochester institution since 1991, Java Joe's on East Avenue is the city's original specialty coffee shop — a cramped, friendly, slightly chaotic counter-service spot that still does things the way it always has: serious espresso, good drip coffee, homemade pastries, and the kind of regulars who come every day and have their drink started when they walk through the door. It's the coffee shop that refuses to be a chain, in a neighbourhood that has seen plenty of chains come and go. Good for a quick breakfast before the George Eastman Museum, which is a short walk away.
