Getting Around

Rochester is a car-oriented city, and most visitors will find a car the easiest way to get between its scattered attractions. Parking downtown is generally cheap — surface lots and garages charge a few dollars a day — and the drive between the George Eastman Museum, the Strong Museum, and Highland Park takes under 15 minutes.

The RTS (Regional Transit Service) bus network covers the metro area, but routes are infrequent and the bus schedule can be frustrating outside of peak hours on main corridors. The downtown bus loop and key routes along East Avenue (toward the Eastman Museum) are serviceable.

On foot: Downtown Rochester is walkable, and the Genesee River trail connects High Falls to several bridges and parks along the gorge. The Park Avenue neighbourhood — coffee shops, bookstores, restaurants, the Eastman Museum — is compact and pleasant to walk. Highland Park and the South Wedge are each walkable internally but are a taxi or bike ride from downtown.

Cycling: Rochester has a reasonable network of bike lanes and paths, including the Genesee Riverway Trail which follows the river south from downtown. Bewhere of the winter months (November–March) when cycling is realistic only for the determined.

Rideshare: Uber and Lyft both operate in Rochester and are the practical solution for trips between attractions scattered across the city.
